Iliotibial Band SyndromeSymptoms of the iliotibial band syndrome include pain or aching on the outer side of the knee. This usually happens in the middle or at the end of a run. At the same time a problem may occur at the hip called greater trochanteric bursitis. During flexion and extension of the knee the iliotibial band rubs over the femoral condyle which leads to irritation. Some of the factors that can contribute to this syndrome are genu varum (bow legs), pronation of the foot (subtalar joint pronation), leg length discrepancy, and running on a crowned surface. Over the past few years an association with weak gluteus medeus muscles has been found in many runners with ITB syndrome.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome is more prevalent on the outer side of your knee. This knee pain does not come with any package like, swelling, stiffness, redness or locking of the knee. This syndrome is strange because the pain plays a hide and seeks with the patient or the sufferer. This knee pain can be sporadic and disappear with the rest and can return back at the same point. Some people complain that the pain continues when they keep running and suddenly disappears when they stop running.
Most likely causes
The name is derived from the iliotibial band. This is a band of tissue that stretches from outside of the pelvis and extends to the outside part of the knee. This tissue is responsible for providing support to your knee. Some times due to the variation in its size that runs too tightly on the bone of your leg and becomes initiated. The stiffness is as usually the result of too much strain from overtraining.
